Mirrors

Mirrors on cars allow a driver to observe the area around their vehicle and to minimize any blind spots. This is a crucial security feature when driving on roadways and when parking in garages or driveway. Drivers must be able to use their mirrors regularly and quickly respond to what they see in them. During a class instructors will make sure that the mirrors are properly adjusted and positioned to maximize visibility.

Drivers should make a habit of checking their mirrors each time they change gear and move from one lane to another, or accelerate or slow down. This will allow them to keep in view of their surroundings and react quickly if there is another vehicle in the same lane or if they are too close to an object in front of them. A driving test examiner will be looking for evidence that the driver is regularly looking at their mirrors when they perform a manoeuvre or approach a danger.

Mirrors that are not correctly adjusted or positioned can create large blind spots, which can increase the chance of spotting another vehicle during lane changes or merging. The rearview mirror should be set to allow the driver to see the entire back window without having their neck craned or having their head swayed excessively. Side mirrors should be adjusted to allow drivers to see both to the left and right of the vehicle's body. Certain vehicles may have convex mirrors which can further reduce blind spots.

Before signalling to change lanes or turning, it's important to be sure to check your rear and side view mirrors. They can help you detect other vehicles in the vicinity. Some drivers develop bad habits, and they do not check their mirrors on their sides. This is especially the case when they are used to driving in traffic or at higher speeds. A defensive driving class can help a driver learn to check their mirrors correctly and make it a routine part of their daily driving routine.
