Nola Bank opened in New Orleans on Sept. 14 with $29.2 million in capital, the seventh startup bank to open in 2026 and Louisiana’s first new charter since 2010. Chairman Henry Coaxum said the bank will seek minority depository institution certification, which opens federal programs to it and lets mainstream banks earn Community Reinvestment Act credit for depositing with it.

Jesse Van Tol, president and chief executive of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, wrote in a Sept. 17 Shelterforce op-ed that the Community Reinvestment Act proposal would sharply weaken scrutiny of banks.
